Jordan is a destination made for exploration. From the historic streets of Amman to the ancient city of Petra, the red desert landscapes of Wadi Rum and the coastline of Aqaba, a road trip lets you experience the country at your own pace.

If you are planning a week in Jordan, renting a car can make it easier to combine major attractions, scenic drives and smaller stops without depending entirely on fixed transport schedules.

This seven-day Jordan road trip itinerary will help you organize your route, plan overnight stays and decide which rental car suits your journey.

Day 1: Explore Amman

Begin your journey in Amman, Jordan's capital. Explore the Citadel, visit the Roman Theatre and discover the city's cafés, traditional markets and local restaurants.

Spend the night in Amman and avoid scheduling too many activities immediately after an international flight.

Driving tip: If you are arriving at Queen Alia International Airport, arrange your rental pickup in advance and confirm the handover details before your flight.

Day 2: Amman to Jerash and Ajloun

Head north to Jerash, known for its remarkably preserved Roman ruins, colonnaded streets and ancient plazas. If time permits, continue to Ajloun to explore its historic castle and surrounding countryside.

Return to Amman or stay nearby, depending on your preferred pace.

This day combines history, architecture and landscapes without requiring a long drive south.

Day 3: Amman to Madaba and the Dead Sea

Travel towards Madaba, famous for its Byzantine-era mosaics. Depending on your schedule, you can also visit Mount Nebo before continuing towards the Dead Sea.

The Dead Sea is known for its unusually salty water and mineral-rich shoreline. Check access arrangements at your chosen beach or resort before travelling.

Stay near the Dead Sea or continue to Madaba if you prefer a different overnight base.

Driving tip: Some routes involve steep descents and winding sections. Drive carefully and allow extra time for viewpoints and stops.

Day 4: Drive to Petra

Head south towards Petra, one of Jordan's most celebrated archaeological destinations.

You can choose the more direct Desert Highway route or take the scenic King's Highway if you have enough time for a slower journey and sightseeing stops.

After arriving, settle into your accommodation and prepare for an early start the following day.

Day 5: Discover Petra

Dedicate most of the day to Petra. Walk through the Siq towards the famous Treasury and explore additional trails and archaeological areas according to your fitness level and available time.

Wear comfortable footwear, carry water and check official visitor information for opening hours, tickets and trail conditions.

Spend another night near Petra so you do not have to rush your visit.

Day 6: Petra to Wadi Rum

Drive towards Wadi Rum, a spectacular desert landscape famous for sandstone mountains, open valleys and distinctive red sand.

Leave enough time to reach your accommodation and join an authorized local desert tour. Standard rental cars should remain on public roads and at the agreed visitor parking area; desert driving should be arranged with a suitable local operator.

Spend the night in Wadi Rum if your budget and schedule allow.

Day 7: Wadi Rum to Aqaba

Travel to Aqaba for a final day by the Red Sea. Depending on your departure arrangements, you could enjoy the waterfront, explore the city or relax before travelling onward.

If your flight leaves from Amman, plan the return journey carefully. Aqaba to Amman is a substantial drive, so you may need an additional night or a different itinerary to avoid rushing.

Which Rental Car Should You Choose?

The right vehicle depends on your group size, luggage and travel plans.

  • Economy car: A practical option for couples or solo travelers who want to manage costs.

  • Automatic sedan: A comfortable choice for longer paved-road journeys and small families.

  • SUV: Worth considering for larger groups, extra luggage or a preference for additional cabin space.

A larger vehicle is not automatically necessary for Jordan's main paved tourist routes. Check the specific vehicle, luggage capacity and rental terms before booking.
